September 10, 2016 was Arvada, CO’s inaugural Neighborhood Rehab Project (NRP) Day of Service. In Arvada alone, approximately 140 men, women and children signed up to Be A Tool, and worked at one of nine different project sites.
One of those Arvada sites was CHF – Colorado Homeless Families – where long term transitional housing is provided for working families who are homeless or at imminent risk of being homeless. When CHF was nominated for the Day of Service, NRP – whose mission is to provide warm, dry, safe living conditions for our neighbors – quickly determined how our volunteers could help with a serious safety concern.
Nine decks were in disrepair with loose planks, broken steps, and unstable railings. To date, four of those decks are no longer a safety risk. On the Day of Service, two decks were removed and replaced with beautiful, sturdy structures. On December 3, another team of volunteers, including the City of Arvada’s Detective Wick, and several others who had experienced what it meant to Be A Tool on the Day of Service, returned to CHF to build two more new decks.
Be A Tool
The City of Arvada has provided the materials for all nine decks, and the remaining five will be built on a "mini" Day of Service - May 6, 2017. On that day, volunteers will also be helping an elderly neighbor in Arvada do yard work that he can no longer safely manage himself. If we have enough Tools that day, some painting will also get done.
NRP is always looking for local opportunities to serve our neighbors in need. Typically, these are low-income, elderly or disabled homeowners within our communities. If you live in Golden, Arvada or Englewood, CO and know someone who could use our help, click here to Nominate a Neighbor.
